A desire for flexible working arrangements and a reluctance to relocate for more senior roles were the reasons behind a gender pay gap in the jewellery retail industry that was higher than the national average, research has shown. A new report, published by ArtsProfessional, illuminates the somewhat taboo subject of pay and earnings within the Arts Sector.  Alongside a quantitative analysis of pay, accross many dimensions of earning- in different organisations, by different demographics and in self-employed, part-time and full-time work- is a staggering 80 pages of qualitative data, made up of over 650 individual comments. Agustina Ros is a young and promising glass jewelry artist who combines the sensitivity of art and the resolution of design. Craft of Gold Beating Now Extinct New Research Shows

New research by the Heritage Crafts Association has found many traditional craft skills in the UK to be hanging on by a thread including a handful of metal working skills. Gold beating is now an officially extinct craft no longer being practiced in the UK. Critically endangered metal skills are listed as metal thread making, hat block making, plane making, saw making and spade making. Metal working skills are then also listed on the Endangered List of The Radcliffe Red List of Endangered Crafts. Seeking technician able to repair polishing machine We are looking for someone to repair our polishing machine! We had the lovely Double Spindle (Single Speed) Polishing Machine from Arbe USA. The blower in the machine would intermittently fail. We were put in direct contact with the manufacturer. They shipped us a new blower which we replaced. The machine worked for a couple of months and then the same issue occurred, we were sent another blower. We rewired this one in. The machine was working fine, then the suction became weak. A survey with 120 respondents carried out by  The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council  has found that Covid-19 is adversely impacting designer-makers across the UK, driving it to announce a series of new initiatives to support, connect and inspire isolated craftspeople during this time. In a survey shared with silversmiths, jewellery designers, manufacturers, apprentices and those working in allied trades, The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council (GC&DC) sought to understand the current needs, concerns and mood of its audience in order to best support them during this time. Kassandra Lauren Gordon Fund awards £21k in grants

The Kassandra Lauren Gordon Fund (KLG Fund) has awarded a total of £21,000 in grants to Black people working in the jewellery industry who need support for their businesses and have faced financial hardship because of the current crisis, following a review by a panel of five independent industry judges, who said they were “overwhelmed by the talent, creativity and enthusiasm of the applicants”. In June, Black jeweller and activist Kassandra Lauren Gordon successfully raised £19,483 on a Go Fund Me page, exceeding the original £14,000 target. 328 people, businesses and trade organisations made donations ranging from £5 to £5,000.

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America), working with nonprofit international development organization Pact, have recently launched a pilot study to test a new rough gem guide. The guide was developed specifically to offer basic gemological and market knowledge for artisanal miners in gem-producing regions. Rachel Entwistle Jewellery x Paul Smith Collaboration

Rachel Entwistle Jewellery has been working with Paul Smith in a collaboration for a collection planned for AW17. The new designs were featured in the Paul Smith AW17 Men's Paris Fashion Week Show.  The Paul Smith show merged men's and women's collections into one show with both collections sharing a direct design association, with their roots firmly planted in tailoring.   Rachel Entwistle's own approach to design, which transcends traditional concepts of male or female, perfectly complemented the Paul Smith Collections.  Jewellery included minimal engraved pendants, hand carved necklaces, plaque bracelets and pendants as well as signet rings.
